- Sorceress -

Seifer has always had high ambitions and dreams. He strives to be the best, to be superior to everyone else. And the way to achieve this was to become the Knight of a Sorceress.

Being fond of archaic things (like naming his Gunblade, and all those Fire Crosses), this dream fits perfectly. Seifer simply oozes regality, and with his fighting skills, a Sorceress would have to be crazy not to want him.

Now, I have read on a million sites that Seifer becomes the Knight of Edea. This isn't true! Edea's Knight is Cid, Balamb-G's headmaster. Seifer's Sorceress is Ultimecia, the most powerful Sorceress of all time, who had possessed Edea's (and Rinoa's) body.

The concept of relationship between Sorceress and Knight is an interesting one. With both Edea and Cid, and Rinoa and Squall (though I can never accept her as being a proper Sorceress > <) the pair are lovers. Sorceress Adel is rumoured to be psychotic due to the fact she has no Knight. So the question remains, what about Ultimecia and Seifer?

I can't perceive them to be lovers. Yeah, I'm biased. But look at the circumstances. It is very unlikely that Seifer has even physically seen Ultimecia in her true form, unless she pulled him through time to her castle. Also, the way they met wasn't exactly on the friendliest of terms. Ultimecia played on insult to convince Seifer to join her, when he would have done so regardless. And she keeps insulting him, dismissing him as "pathetic" whenever he loses a 3 against 1 battle - WITH GFs!

But yet, Seifer continues to follow her, to the point of his ambitions blinding him. He dubs himself Ultimecia's bloodhound, but Squall calls him "the Sorceress' lapdog", and the description is more accurate. Even Fuujin and Raijin, his loyal Posse members, recognise this, and are forced to leave the Knight because they can't stand watching him lose himself.

If the game was played from Seifer's perspective, it could be a Greek Tragedy, with Seifer being the hero. He has the characteristics of a hero; bravery, courage, loyalty, and ambition. These virtues are his vices at the same time, leading to his eventual downfall and defeat.

When Ultimecia abandons him after the battle at Lunatic Pandora, he realises his role in her scheme. He wishes Squall and the others luck against her in one of the saddest moments of the game, and disappears until later spotted fishing with his pals in Balamb. Rebuilding his life again would be extremely difficult, especially if he must admit he was manipulated. Ultimecia is defeated, as the boss always is in games, and travels back in time to transfer her powers to Edea. At this point, Seifer is still a child, and so the cycle begins again, and will repeat itself indefinitely.
